CS Bits & Bytes hosts Sam Hiken ‘23 Paglia Fellow

Thu, October 24, 2024 • 3:30pm - 4:30pm (1h) • Anderson 329

Sam Hiken '23 a Post-Baccalaureate Research Fellow will tell us some about the research he is currently working on, but also about the Paglia Fellowship that is supporting him to do research for several years after Carleton.  We'll also have lots of time for just chatting and asking questions.  A brief abstract about Sam's research is below.

Abstract: Over the last several decades, researchers have had astonishing success in identifying computational problems that are "intractable" (ie, those that cannot be solved in polynomial time), but have had less success in distinguishing between problems that, for instance, can be solved in linear time and those that require quadratic time. I work in an area called "fine-grained complexity," where we seek to understand the relative tractability of fundamental problems on graphs, strings, and related objects, even in the regime where polynomial-time algorithms are possible.

Join us for conversation, community and treats/beverages!
