CS Tea: Chelsey Edge presents "Computational Visual Perception for Underwater Human-Robot Interaction"
Chelsey Edge from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities will talk about her research on autonomous underwater vehicles.
The use of visually guided Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) able to work in a cooperative team alongside human divers is beneficial in scenarios such as underwater infrastructure maintenance and monitoring invasive species, and are increasingly used to assist with tasks that are inherently complex and even dangerous to those who currently provide these services. However, due to the complex and dynamic challenges, such as signal attenuation and poor visibility, of an underwater environment Underwater human-robot interaction (U-HRI) is a very open research area. In this talk, I will present my research attempts to improve visual communication from divers to AUVs for underwater task-based collaboration. Specifically, I will focus on how natural human communication methods can be used to direct an AUV to an object or direction of interest to the diver for completion of a task. I will also discuss open research directions for underwater task-based human-robot interaction.
