Website Redesign: Block migration & theme previewing overview
Connect to Virtual Event
Over the summer and into the fall, our web team will be executing the final phase of site preparation ahead of launching the new theme (January 2027): block migration and new theme previewing. This work ensures that when we officially launch the new theme, your pages will look as expected.
This session is intended for site editors and owners, plus others interested in what this work will entail.
Some things we'll cover:
- New WordPress blocks: You will see new blocks appearing in your WordPress library. We'll start previewing how to use them.
- New block editing interface: Once your site is migrated, you will notice a new pop-out menu for editing blocks. This is part of a larger, standard WordPress update. The process for getting to the page editor will remain the same; simply, the interface for making individual block edits will now be done in the pop-out menu on the side of the interface.
- Header changes: Counter-intuitively, new header content (aka “Carleton Page Top-Matter”) will live at the bottom of the page while in editing mode. There will be more fields here to complete, and after migration, your header will be one of the things that looks different ahead of the new theme going live.
- Theme previewing: This phase allows you to see exactly what your live site will look like under the new theme. This is the time to start thinking about rearranging content, swapping photos, or trimming text.
We know June is a busy time for some of you, and also that many of you will be away. This session will be recorded for those who cannot attend. We will also host a second webinar in late August for site admins returning closer to the academic year.
