Official Typefaces

Carleton’s two brand typefaces, Gotham and Surveyor, bring different strengths and personalities, depending on how they are used in relation to each other. The College has limited licenses for use of these typefaces.

Gotham is our primary typeface. It is the most recognizable and frequently used font in our marketing materials. It’s a clean, modern, sans-serif typeface that works well for headlines, body copy, and everything between. Gotham is optimized for both print and web applications and is highly legible at all sizes.

Surveyor Display is an elegant headline font based on a style of engraved lettering used by British mapmakers in the early nineteenth century. This serif font works best for headlines, quotes, callouts, or display text, but should never be used for body copy or small text.

Alternative Options

When the brand fonts are unavailable, two free alternatives may be used in their place:

  • Montserrat is very similar to Gotham, and is a suitable substitute in most cases.
  • Playfair Display will work as a stand-in for Surveyor Display, though there are notable differences in some uses of the two fonts.

Both are free for both personal and commercial use and are available in Canva. They can be downloaded from Google Fonts.
