Recap of plans from previous meeting

Last meeting, we agreed on several goals for the year. In our proxy voting this year, we may try to take a “case law” approach vis a vis proxies similar to the ones that were approved in previous years. This would occur in February.

The “case law system” would pave the way for future discussion of a more formal proxy voting policy. Another thing we could try to do would be to petition the trustees to put part of the endowment in an SRI fund. This could be discussed in May.

SRI competition

In addition to petitioning the trustees to put part of the endowment into an SRI fund, we may try to have an SRI contest where students will compete to pick the best SRI portfolio. This would start in the spring.

If we do the SRI competition, a big obstacle would be how to reward the winner. Giving cash prizes is difficult for tax reasons. We also don’t have a formal budget that we could use to buy other prizes. Maybe we could set up a grant, since grant money to avoid this difficulty. Another possibility would be to have the competition be between Carleton student groups, and have the winner receive an increased budget as their reward. Chris will look into this and talk to Fred. For now, Chris and Sara will be in charge of planning the SRI competition.

Research

We did a recap of how EthVest works. It seems that there is a new feature whereby Jane Hubbard or CRIC members can “tell” it which stocks we have. This will save time in doing research.

Another very helpful thing is EthVest email alerts. Everyone on the CRIC email list should be getting these. There was one in the past few days.

When should we do the research? Between now and the beginning of next term. Mihaela has an upcoming book, so she will be busy for most of winter break. This means that we should try to get an updated list of holdings soon.
