CRIC minutes for April 22, 2011
Last week
We did not have a meeting last week because Kristen was ill and in the hospital. She is now better, and she will attend next week’s meeting.
Next week
Fred will be absent during next week’s meeting.
REC letter
We have received a finalized version of the letter created by the REC that was discussed at our last meeting. The letter deals with political contributions and hydraulic fracturing. This year, our trustees approved votes on resolutions dealing with both of these issues.
This letter is in line with our principles, but there may be some issues. We are not sure exactly who will see it. We also aren’t sure if we are allowed to make a statement like this as CRIC.
We will contact Joe Hargis to ask his opinion. If he thinks that it is acceptable for us to sign the letter, we will do so.
3M meeting
Kristen, Fadi, and Joel are going to a 3M shareholders’ meeting on May 10th. This trip was organized by Dan Apfeld of REC; people from Macalaster will also be attending. Earlier, we thought that Dan Apfeld would certainly be able to provide us with three tickets, but recently there has been doubt as to whether he will have enough. Fred will contact the investment office to try to secure tickets for them just in case there are not enough.
Another important issue is that Kristen and Fadi focus on what our investment committee considered and voted on. They will be working in concert with others, however, they should try to stick this.
We can also use this meeting as a platform to explain the rationale for our vote. We could even leave a printed copy of the section of our report dealing with 3M.
Kristen and/or Fadi ought to co-write a Carletonian article afterwards to discuss their trip.
Raising Awareness
Joe has been making plans for mailings to raise awareness about CRIC. It would be best to co-ordinate such mailings with the unveiling of a new survey.
The old survey was confusing and overwhelming to students. We will need to restructure it. Perhaps information about CRIC could be put into a brief paragraph at the beginning of the survey, and then the questions themselves could be made more concise.
We could also raise awareness through the CLAP.
A re-vamped website will help with our efforts. We will update our information and possibly alter the design. David Schlosser will look into this before our next meeting.
ICCR vs. SI2
On the one hand, briefing papers from SI2 could be presented to the investment committee during our annual meeting. This, combined with the broader spectrum of resolutions covered by SI2, could help us vote on more proxies.
On the other hand, SI2 is expensive. It is probably only worth the cost if we decide that expanded proxy voting is going to be our main goal; if we decide that the CRIC should try to branch out instead, it probably does not make sense to spend the extra money.
Also, there may be value to us doing the research ourselves as opposed to relying on outside briefing papers.
