At the rather small CRIC meeting this afternoon, members addressed what the CRIC has left to do this term. Since the last meeting, the application for new CRIC members has been added to the CRIC website. Members will continue to contact people who may be interested in joining the committee, such as the investment group on campus and economics and ENTS majors. The position is already listed in the NNB, but the committee will further advertise it in posters around campus and in the All Campus Email.
The committee decided to make the deadline for student applications next Friday, May 7. That way there will be enough time for the committee and CSA to review the applications. Pavel will no longer be on the committee next year, so the CRIC will also be looking for a new faculty member. The CRIC still plans to release the survey during seventh week, and Amanda, Joe, and Chuck are preparing it. They will try to have a draft done by Wednesday or Thursday of next week so the rest of the committee can look it over before Friday’s meeting.
Members then discussed the research they have done on the socially responsible investment groups of Carleton’s peer institutions. Though most institutions did not seem ahead of Carleton in responsible investment, a couple had interesting tactics including drawing media attention to issues with written proposals, and in the case of Smith College, creating community development funds and banning certain types of investments (such as those in tobacco and the Sudan).
Kristen then asked the group what the CRIC’s goals should be in the future, and the committee discussed pushing increased transparency of the college’s hedge funds and promoting a policy that would prohibit investment in the Sudan. The survey will also try to determine the Carleton community’s opinion of what the CRIC focus on. The next meeting will be on Friday, May 7, at 3:30.
