As January is the busiest month for the Carleton Responsible Investment Committee, today’s meeting had much to cover. The CRIC welcomed a new member, David Tompkins, who along with Pavel Kapinos, will be taking Mike Hemesath’s place as the faculty members on the committee. After introductions, Kristen outlined the committee’s plan of action for this term, which primarily involves preparing reports on shareholder resolutions for the meeting with the Board of Trustees in February.

The main task of today’s meeting was looking over the list of shareholder resolutions that committee members compiled over winter break. Among the factors considered were last spring’s survey results (which indicate the areas the Carleton community feels most strongly about), whether the committee has drafted reports on similar resolutions in the past, the feasibility of making a compelling argument to the board on the resolution, and committee member preferences. The committee is especially focusing on human rights and environmental resolutions, as per the spring’s survey results.

The CRIC tentatively decided to recommend the following proposals, with the related companies in parentheses:

Tobacco Farm Worker: Human Rights Policy (Altria Group Inc.)

Human Right to Water (Ecolab Inc. Co.)

Foreign Military Sales (Caterpillar Inc.)

Hydraulic Fracturing/Toxic Chemicals (El Paso Corp., Encana Corp., EOG Resources, William Co.)

FS Certification for Sustainable Forestries (Weyerhauser Co.)

Electric Power–Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets (Dominion Resources Inc., Dynegy Inc.)

Remediate the Midlands (Dow Chemical Corp.)

Sexual Orientation and Non-Discrimination/Gender Non-Discrimination (Wal-Mart, Home Depot)

Say on Pay (American Express Co., Cisco Systems, CocaCola Co., CVS Caremark, Encana Corp., Goldman Sachs, IBM, Johnson&Johnson, Microsoft, PepsiCo (3), Raytheon, Wal-Mart)

Each member was assigned a shareholder resolution for which they will prepare an outline for a report by next Friday. The committee may narrow down or add to the list of resolutions before the next meeting. All final reports must be given to Fred Rogers by January 27. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for 3:30pm next Friday.

Additionally, all of the reports and results of the Committee’s work last year have now been added to the website.
