The CRIC’s meeting this Tuesday had three primary aims: to report back on individual resolutions members of the CRIC have been following, to discuss the follow-up report for the Trustees, and to discuss communication to the campus, particularly by means of a survey. First, each member updated the committee on the status of the proposal he or she was monitoring. Over spring break, three more resolutions were withdrawn—Safeway’s resolution on sustainability, Pepsi’s resolution on the right to water, and GE’s resolution on compact fluorescent bulbs. The CRIC considers these withdrawals successes because they usually signify a positive discussion and agreement between the companies and the writers of the resolutions. The committee then progressed to the contents of the report to the Trustees. Members agreed it should include some sort of economic analysis of the resolutions. This could consist of a description of the pros and cons each resolution would have on the company, community, and/or investors, the impact proposed policies would have if they were generalized, and reasons for withdrawal in the cases of withdrawn resolutions. Ideally, this report should get to the Trustees before their next meeting so they have an opportunity to discuss it. The CRIC plans to communicate with the community in several ways this term. For one, the committee will distribute a survey to ascertain the campus’ opinion of the direction the CRIC should take. After completing the mailing to the Trustees, the committee also hopes to produce an article for the Carletonian informing the campus of the CRIC’s efforts and accomplishments this year, since many students may be unaware of its purpose. Lastly, the committee has to complete a self-assessment by the end of the year. At the end of the meeting, the CRIC divided into two sub-committees to tackle the report to the Trustees and the survey. These sub-committees will meet sometime before the next official meeting, which is Tuesday, April 21.
