Goal of Workshop 1.2

Discuss why and how the higher education sector is taking on the climate crisis, how Carleton’s sustainability efforts are perceived externally, and how we compare to other schools.

Tasks & Discussion Questions:

  1. External Impressions
    • Do we agree with how external organizations  (Second Nature, STARs, Sierra Club, etc) are representing the role of higher education in addressing the climate crisis?
    • What do we like or not like about how higher education (or Carleton) is being represented?
    • What is the world expecting of higher education? Generally? In the context of the climate crisis?
  1. Climate change and Carleton’s mission
    • How can this work be integrated into the College mission?
    • How do we define sustainability as a college?
    • What does enacting Carleton’s mission in the face of climate change mean and look like? What does it mean for Carleton to “prepare graduates to become citizens and leaders” ready to face challenges in the 21st century and in the midst of global climate change?
  1. Carleton’s STARS rankings
    • Review Carleton STARS data – what are our strengths and gaps?
    • Review other schools’ approach as examples for comparison – what stands out as a particularly good example for Carleton to explore?
    • Colleges address climate change by reducing their carbon emissions and by infusing environmental values, knowledge and stewardship into teaching, research and student life. How can we be most effective at advancing Carleton’s progress on both fronts?
  1. Broader Outreach and Advocacy
    • Review Carleton’s CAP and goals relative to peers, regional / state entities, City of Northfield, etc. What can we learn from others and how should we work together?
    • What type of public advocacy, petitions, declarations, commitments, etc. are appropriate for Carelton to engage in (if any)?
    • How are colleges and universities perceived in their local communities?  How can and should we be leaders in our communities?
    • Carleton is signed on to Second Nature’s carbon commitment. Should we also explore their “resilience” commitment which is focused on climate adaptation and community capacity-building?
