Commencement 2000

126th Annual Commencement Exercises
Preliminary Ticket Information

OUTSIDE LOCATION

Seniors: All family members will receive tickets in the reserved outdoor seating area. Most other non-Carleton friends will receive tickets for seats in the general seating outdoor area. Requests for current students, faculty, staff, and alumni will not be included in the total number of tickets that seniors receive. These individuals will have their own opportunity to request tickets for the general seating area, and those identified on senior forms will automatically be moved to the list for their respective group. College Relations will notify seniors with confirmation of ticket requests. Tickets to seniors will be distributed during Senior Week (details to come).

"Regular" current and retired faculty and full-time adjunct faculty are invited to march in the Academic Procession and will need a reserved ticket. The Dean of the College Office will send out formal invitations for marching and ticket requests. Marching faculty may also request one additional general seating ticket for a guest. Any faculty member who does not march may request up to two tickets for the general seating area. Adjunct music faculty, part-time coaches and very part-time faculty may request up to two general seating tickets but due to space limitations will be unable to march.

Current and retired staff may request up to two general seating tickets. Academic and administrative staff who have regularly marched at Commencement may request to participate this year; however, due to space limitations it may become necessary for the College to restrict the number of staff who march in the procession. There also will be many opportunities for staff to work during Commencement; interested folks should contact Merry Hoekstra in the Office of College Relations (mhoekstr@acs.carleton.edu). College Relations will send current and retired staff members a form for ticket and marching requests.

Non-senior students (who are not working at the event) may request one (1) general seating ticket each. College Relations will send each non-senior student a form for their ticket request. Reminder: non-senior students are required to move out of the residence halls by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6.

Carleton Alumni (non-Carleton staff) may request up to two general seating tickets by May 29. Requests are preferred via email to Merry Hoekstra in the Office of College Relations (mhoekstr@acs.carleton.edu), or you may call the College Relations toll-free number (1-888-202-3312). Because of the expected high demand for tickets, the College may need to hold a lottery to fulfill alumni requests.

General Public: The College does not anticipate having general admission tickets available for the public. The public is invited to view Commencement via closed-circuit broadcast as long as the ceremony is held outdoors.

Other Important Notes

The Office of College Relations hopes to have all ticket notifications in the mail by
June 2.

No one will be allowed to enter the central campus for Commencement without a ticket.

Commencement attendees should arrive at least two hours early and allow plenty of time for parking and to go through metal detectors. The College will establish off-campus parking areas with plenty of shuttle buses to run attendees to and from campus. Cameras will be allowed in the Commencement area, but because of security concerns attendees will not be able to leave their seats during the ceremony to take pictures. Attendees are encouraged NOT to bring other hand-held items to the ceremony because it will slow down the process of moving people through the metal detectors.

Details on parking, ticket distribution, and other issues will be posted as soon as they become available. Parents of graduates will receive a special mailing with further details closer to the time of Commencement.

If severe weather forces Commencement indoors to the Recreation Center, seating will be limited. The reserved tickets issued to seniors for the outdoor location will be valid for the indoor location as well. Other seating priorities will include a limited number of marching faculty and staff, trustees, a select group of national and regional dignitaries, and some members of the press.
