Press Arrangements for President Clinton’s Commencement Address
at Carleton College on June 10


This document contains IMPORTANT information pertinent to the press attending the Carleton College commencement ceremonies. Please read it carefully.

Carleton College reserves the right to alter any of these arrangements as needed to accommodate security concerns and to preserve the integrity of the ceremony for its intended audience, the Class of 2000 and their guests.

When/Where:
Saturday, June 10, 2000
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (entire ceremony)
Lawn west of Hulings Hall, outdoors in any weather (ceremony stage faces west).

President Clinton will speak near the end of the program (approx. 11:00—for planning purposes only).

Satellite trucks:
Trucks MUST arrive for pre-set at 5:00 a.m. All trucks must be INSIDE the secure perimeter by 5:30 a.m. when the security sweep begins. One engineer must stay with the truck to allow access to it during the security sweep. All other personnel must vacate the premises by 5:30 a.m. Trucks should enter the secure perimeter at the corner of First and Winona streets and will be met by Carleton and White House staff who will direct them to the satellite parking area. Extra cabling will be required for a clear signal.

When to arrive:
All members of the press will be allowed to enter the secured site through a metal detector located at First and Winona streets beginning at 7:30 a.m. IMPORTANT: The press entrance CLOSES at 9:00 a.m. You will be REQUIRED to show valid federal or state issued photo identification plus proof of employment with your news organization (a business card or press pass). You then will receive a media badge for this event. If you have not pre-registered, you can gain access to this event by showing a current official press pass from your news organization.

If you have not ALREADY done so, please FAX the following information IMMEDIATELY to be included on a media check-in list:
  • Name of news organization
  • First and last names of all persons attending
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers

General Media
Parking:
BELL FIELD
To enter Bell Field, drive east on Second Street until it ends and then veer left. There will be a gate with a Carleton volunteer stationed at the entrance to Bell Field. You will be REQUIRED to show a valid federal or state issued photo identification plus proof of employment with your news organization (a business card or press pass). Signs will direct you to media check-in.

Press riser:
80 foot throw at 45 degree angle. Video and audio feeds will be available from a pool camera with a 38 foot throw from the front of the podium. Carleton and White House staff will be on hand to escort members of the press to other locations during the ceremony. Important: The escorts are required by the Secret Service, and such movements are only allowed at their approval while President Clinton is on the podium.

Filing Center:
A Minnesota media filing center is available for your use on the southeast lawn of Skinner Memorial Chapel. Phone lines and food are available here, as well as volunteers to answer any questions you may have.

Satellite Feed:
Carleton will provide its own satellite feed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT: Transponder 19, GE3, KU band, analog, horizontal, no encryption, audio frequency 6.268.
