The President’s Cabinet recently adopted the following policy on Commencement stoles, tassels, and cords. Questions may be directed to Karen Moldenhauer in the Provost’s Office.

  • Commencement stoles may be provided by various identity groups (e.g., TRIO, Posse), with approval from the Stoles Group (consisting of representatives from the President’s Office, the Provost’s Office, and the VP and Dean of Students Office). Stoles will not be approved for activity groups (e.g., a sports team).
  • Approved stoles must to be ordered through the College-identified local provider to capitalize on economies of scale.
  • The cost of stoles must be covered by the department, office, or program associated with the identity group. These costs should not be passed along to students.
  • To avoid waste and unnecessary budget spending, students will be asked to return their stole to the College following the Commencement ceremony for use in subsequent years.
  • Cords and gold tassels will be reserved for academic honors only.
