Seeing ‘phon’-ology in (silent) words

In this talk, Shengyun Gu, candidate for the Visiting Assistant Professor in Phonology position, presents evidence from blended words, nonsense words, and loan words from different languages to show that phonological structure and rules are psychologically real. Going beyond that, Gu will also provide evidence from soundless languages (i.e., sign languages) to argue that those phonological principles in the organization of a word transcend different modalities. By looking at both spoken and signed languages, Gu argues, we create a greater understanding of the structure and organization of the ‘meaningless’ side of human language faculty.
