University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

  • Key Notes: It is the policy of the Department of Classics not to admit students to its graduate programs without funding, although exceptions may be made in very particular circumstances. Although the available fellowships and assistantships vary to some extent in the level of support they provide, they all include a stipend, eligibility for full tuition, and health insurance. With only a few exceptions, they all also involve service as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA).

University of Chicago

Subsidized apartments in Morningside Heights are guaranteed to Columbia Ph.D. students for 6 years of their study and are available in limited quantity for stand alone MA students for up to two full time semesters.

The City University of New York

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Bryn Mawr

University of Cincinnati

There is a possibility for entering students to be awarded some additional funding if they are awarded College of Arts and Sciences scholarships.

Washington University, St. Louis

UC Berkeley

We are committed to equity in funding and (so far as this is within our control) offer the same level of support to all students in the program, whether they are teaching or on fellowship. Our support package comprises two initial years of fellowship, a third year of mandatory teaching (“Graduate Student Instructorship”), and thereafter a mix of GSIship and departmental and university fellowship. In the third year and beyond, summer support is a mix of summers of fellowship stipend and summers of GSIship. Students who are accepted with an offer of funding can count on being supported throughout their time in the program (up to eight years) as long as they make satisfactory progress.

USC Dornslife

In the second year, the student usually begins work as a teaching assistant, with a work expectation of not more than 20 hours per week. The stipend is obtained through this type of work, or by working as a teaching fellow, normally through the fourth year. Upon completion of the oral preliminary examination the student may apply for a dissertation fellowship from the University.

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

  • Key Notes: Emerging Scholars Initiative (ESI) Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program. Post-baccalaureate program participants receive a stipend of $42,000 over 12 months for living expenses. Participants also receive financial support that covers tuition for one or more courses per semester during the academic year, health insurance, GRE preparation material provided by Kaplan Review (if necessary), $1,100 for a new laptop computer, and up to $2,000 for expenses related to attending at least one conference in the US.

Duke Trinity College of Arts and Sciences

Princeton (Horizon Fellows Program)

  • Key Notes: The Horizon Fellows Program (formerly known as the Pre-Doctoral Program) is designed to increase access to promising graduate students. Horizon Fellows are regularly admitted graduate students who would benefit from an extra year of academic training. As such, Horizon Fellows will be given one extra year of regular enrollment that begins with their Horizon Fellowship year. In this first year of study, Horizon Fellows work directly with a faculty adviser to design an individualized academic plan to enhance research experience, language work, or theoretical training for graduate study. Georgetown

For 2024-25, the cost of the program is $3977 per semester ($7954 for the academic year). Participation in the program entitles students to take two courses in the Classics department per semester. Additional courses in the department may be taken for an additional per-credit charge. Georgetown University does not offer financial aid for this program.

Columbia

PennState

  • Key Notes: The Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies offers a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in ancient languages. It is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced study in Classics, ancient history, ancient philosophy, Biblical studies, Egyptology, or Near Eastern studies, but who need further language preparation. Students enrolled in the certificate program have the opportunity to advance their knowledge of Greek and Latin, as well as take courses in Hebrew, Sumerian, Akkadian, Middle Egyptian and Hieroglyphics, and Targumic Aramaic. In addition, students take at least one writing-intensive seminar to strengthen their preparation for graduate-level research.

College Year in Athens

  • Key Notes: The M.A. in Classical Studies (Bridge M.A.) is a fully funded, three-term (fall, winter, spring) program designed to assist promising students in Classical Studies, Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, or Greek and Roman Archaeology in developing the Ancient Greek and Latin language skills needed to pursue a Ph.D. in Classical Studies. Applicants must also fit the criteria for eligibility in the Rackham Merit Fellowship Program, which is open to newly admitted students who: Have a record of superior academic achievement; Are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or undocumented students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA); Are excellent in one or good in two or more dimensions of the RMF criteria (see below) as described in the RMF Rubric and the RMF Assessing Eligibility and Evaluating Criteria Guide. Nominee has led and/or substantially engaged in activities that broaden the participation of individuals with diverse backgrounds in the academic, professional, or civic realm.
