19 January 2021

In a recently published article titled “On Cinematic Ekphrasis: Aleksandr Sokurov’s Otets i syn Redux” in Film Criticism, no. 44, Diane Nemec Ignashev overturns held critical approaches to one of Sokurov’s most debated films, with implications for the analysis of his entire ouevre. The article proposes a revision of held opinion on Sokurov’s Father and Son through a close reading that explicates ekphrastic allusions, their sources, and the ways in which they combine to form narrative, offering a possible framework for analysis and interpretation of Sokurov’s other films.
