Frequently Asked Questions
I am a paid student worker (laboratory teaching assistant or stockroom assistant). Where do I access the safety training I need?
The Chemistry Department maintains a Moodle site where paid student workers access appropriate safety training. Paid student workers must complete the safety training before beginning work. Go to Safety Training for Student Workers to complete your training.
I have been injured in the laboratory. I have received the medical attention I need, but I now need to report the incident. How do I report a laboratory incident that resulted in an injury?
The Environment Health and Safety department at Carleton closely monitors laboratory injuries to ensure that safe protocols are being followed by all laboratory workers. If an injury occurs the first step is to notify your professor or supervisor to make sure you receive the medical attention needed to address the injury. Once these immediate needs are taken care of a Student Injury Report Form describing the incident must be logged. When you fill out the form, please check either “Student Employment Incident” or “Student Non-Employment Incident” at the top.
Who is in charge of laboratory safety at Carleton?
While it is the responsibility of every laboratory worker to ensure they follow appropriate safety measures, the Chemistry Department in cooperation with the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department set the safety standards and protocols followed in the laboratory. The EH&S website includes useful guides and documents for working safely in the laboratory. In addition, EH&S manages the safe disposal of hazardous materials generated on campus.
Does the Chemistry Department have a chemical hygiene plan?
Yes, the Chemistry Department Chemical Hygiene plan can be accessed here. In addition, the college has a more extensive, overarching chemical hygiene plan that is available on the EH&S website.
I’m working with lasers in my research laboratory. Are there materials available to learn about general laser safety?
Yes, we use this Laser Safety document for general laser safety training. However, be sure to consult with your research adviser about specific safety measures that must be taken when working with your particular laser equipment.
