This week the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is hosting Della Dumbaugh sponsored by the Elizabeth Nason Distinguished Women Visitors Fund and the Michael Morrill Fund.
Dr. Dumbaugh, the Editor of the world’s largest circulation math publication, the American Mathematical Monthly, is a math historian who will be speaking on Thursday evening about unusual people who supported women in mathematics and the sciences in the early 20th century. We thought your students interested in promoting women in STEM might be interested.

Title: “Expect the Unexpected: Pioneers who Promoted Women in Math and Science”
Abstract: How did a department store magnate and a playwright advance American mathematics and science—and women in these male dominated fields in particular? This talk will explore the lives of Caroline Bamberger Fuld and Clare Booth Luce as we examine the surprising range of personalities that influenced the development of mathematics and science in America in the twentieth century.
She will also be speaking this afternoon on the story of writing a mathematical biography.

Abstract: Have you ever wondered what goes into writing a book? Would it surprise you to learn that travel and teaching can play vital roles in the writing of research books on mathematics? This non-technical talk traces the development of the book Emil Artin and Beyond: Class Field Theory and L-Functions from the initial idea to the publication of the volume highlighting unexpected twists and turns in the process.
