More information if you are considering the lasers class (Chem 354) for next term
If you are interested in the details of molecular behavior at the quantum level (vibrations, rotations, electrons) and how lasers are powerful tools for both molecular science and technology, then Chem 354 is the class for you. The class is usually small enough in order to be discussion- and project-based with the class helping decide the emphasis on which topics are covered. The range of topics would include: the basis and nature of selection rules with a review of quantum principles, time scales of molecular and atomic behavior, foundations and some details of laser operation, the use of symmetry to correlate with spectroscopic patterns, and exposure to some important experimental strategies that help define possible experiments in recent applications targeting specific energy states with lasers.
The class will not be offered next year. There is no formal lab component this time (i.e Chem 355) but some activities will be brought in to class. There will be homework sets, class presentations, summaries of project-style activities, and a term paper.
Please contact me if you would like any more information, thanks!
