My presentation will cover both (a) my PhD/postdoc research in environmental chemistry and (b) the path I’ve taken to, through, and after grad school. Atmospheric fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, is an major component of air pollution around the world. PM2.5 is regulated and often measured in terms of mass concentration in the air, but the chemical components that make up that mass provide information about PM2.5 sources and may influence health effects. In my dissertation, I used chemical analysis of personal exposure PM2.5 to investigate the sources contributing to personal exposures in communities using solid fuels in household stoves. I’ll also talk about what drew me to environmental chemistry, why I decided to stay beyond my MS to get a PhD, and thoughts on future directions (hint: more than just the traditional academic track!).
