Summer Science Fellows
The goal of the Summer Science Fellowship is to broaden participation of Historically underrepresented groups (including gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, and disabilities) in the sciences/math. Carleton Summer Science Fellows will have the opportunity to work in a research lab either at Carleton or at another institution for two summers with a summer stipend of $4600. Summer Science Fellows will be expected to enroll in the 1 credit Science Fellows Research Colloquium in the Spring before and the Fall following their research experience.
The application deadline is January 11th, 2019. Here is the link: https://apps.carleton.edu/mathscience/research/summer_fellows/

Materials Meeting presentation by Kim Huynh, PhD research
The next Materials Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 16 from 3:15-4:15 pm in Old Music Hall room 107. Prof. Kim Huynh will give a presentation about her PhD research, “Adsorption and Mechanistic Studies of Dimethyl Methylphosphonate for Chemical Warfare Agent Defeat.”
“This presentation discusses the systematic investigation of the current gas mask filtration material, ASZM-TEDA, using deconstruction–reconstruction experiments. Our objective is to not only understand the role of each impregnant but also the factors that influence filter performance and filter lifetime. Chemical warfare agent simulant, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), is used in our studies to evaluate the adsorption properties and reactivity of different materials, using temperature programmed desorption (TPD)/quantitative 1H-NMR, combined with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) bulk analysis.”
