Towsley Endowment Support for Summer Research

Student Research at Carleton: The Towsley Endowment provides financial support for Carleton students working with Carleton science and math faculty on campus (or in the field) during summer break. Awards fund student stipends ($460/week for full time work) for up to 10 weeks during summer break and can include expenses for travel and research supplies. No award will exceed $5100. Note that students must work full time in order to qualify (i.e. they must not hold another job during the award period). Carleton faculty in science and math departments and programs are eligible to apply.

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated advanced undergraduates who will be rising seniors in summer 2018 to apply for participation in the 10th annual NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2018). Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes. Participants will fly onboard the NASA DC-8 and assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases and to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. Each student will complete an individual research project from the data collected.

Off-Campus SEA Semester Tabling & Info Sessions Jan. 10
The SEA Semester is an amazing off-campus adventure in environmental studies that combines the science of sailing with climate science, ocean science, culture, and more. A wide variety of programs emphases, locations, and voyage times are available. A SEA admissions counselor, Julia LoPresti, will be at Carleton on Wed. Jan. 10. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in projects at federal research facilities located across the country focused on helping DNDO meet its mission of “implementing domestic nuclear detection efforts for a managed and coordinated response to radiological and nuclear threats, as well as integration of federal nuclear forensics programs.” This program will prepare a diverse, highly talented, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers to address issues related to national security and nuclear detection and to enhance the future scientific and technical workforce to be both knowledgeable and trained in fields of specific interest to DNDO.
