Chemistry Department Seminar: Alex Miller
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “Cation-Responsive Pincer-Crown Ether Complexes for Tunable Catalysis”.
Friday, November 11th, 2016
3:30 / Olin 04
Catalyst performance is often regulated by substrate binding to a transition metal center, but control over substrate binding remains elusive. We are harnessing interactions between molecular catalysts and their environment to control organometallic catalysis. Incorporating a crown ether macrocycle into a robust pincer ligand enables the donor properties of such “pincer-crown ether” ligands to be tuned through cation-macrocycle interactions. Mechanistic studies of the dynamic interactions between catalysts, cations, and substrates provide an emerging picture of how cations can tune ligand substitution, oxidative addition, and migratory insertion in catalysis.

AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program
Providing career exploration for over 40 years.
The 2017 application available
October 16 – January 15!The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program places science, engineering, and mathematics students and postdocs at media organizations nationwide. Fellows have worked as reporters, editors, researchers, and production assistants at media outlets that include the Los Angeles Times, WIRED, National Public Radio, National Geographic Society, and Scientific American.
The AAAS Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write and report today’s headlines, while sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific issues to the public. The Fellowship experience broadens the fellow’s career path while increasing the public’s understanding of science and technology. Breakthrough Twin Cities Internship Opportunities
My name is Nick Hamel, Middle School Director at Breakthrough Twin Cities. I’m reaching out with an a paid, teaching internship opportunity for college students at Carleton. Nationally rated a top-10 internship by the Princeton review, the Teaching Fellowship is a great avenue for students to explore the field of education, build meaningful relationships with middle school students, and work to impact educational inequity in the Twin Cities. We are always looking for outstanding students from the STEM fields who are interested in helping Middle School students get excited about science and math, so I’m hoping you can forward this opportunity along to your students.
I’ll be on campus presenting about the opportunity on Thursday, November 10th from 12:00 – 1:00 at Leighton Hall, Room 303. If you can’t make it but want more information, please follow this link to sign up for our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/cdoCL9. I’ve also attached a flyer with some general information about the internship. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any additional questions.
Best,
Nick Hamel | Middle School Director
