Join a community of scholars and professionals who guide the public’s understanding of religion.
Want to dive more deeply into questions big and small about religion as a category and the religions of the world, their history, beliefs, and practices? Eager to cultivate habits of thinking, learning, and communicating that will help you navigate a changing world?
Students with backgrounds in fields across the humanities and social sciences are invited to learn more about graduate study and leadership in religion at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Joined by Carleton alumna and current MDiv Student Gillian Applegate ’17, MA/PhD Alumnus and Assistant Dean of Students Nathan J. Hardy will share information about what makes the Divinity School a distinctive community of learning, in which graduates go on to further study in elite doctoral programs and law schools, religious leadership, and an array of careers in non-profit and business sectors.
Programs offered:
- Our two-year Master of Arts in Divinity (MA) provides advanced training in the academic study of religion and adjacent fields for students eager to build research and writing skills, enhance language training, and pursue intellectual depth in a robust and academically varied community. This program is ideal for students interested in doctoral study, but inclusive of broad outcomes.

Our Master of Arts in Religious Studies (AMRS) program provides a foundational course of study for students interested in the arts, law, medicine, technology, business, and more who would benefit in their career goals from foundational training in the academic study of religion. This program can be pursued intensely over one-year or part-time over up to three years. It is not typically considered adequate for entry into PhD programs.
- Rooted in the Divinity School’s historic commitment to the training of scholarly ministers, today’s Master of Divinity (MDiv) program welcomes students of many traditions—Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Confucian, Christian, and humanist—as they prepare for engagement in an ever-increasing variety of contexts alongside students anticipating ordination and traditional vocations in religious community leadership. Through this three-year program of study, students develop foundations for religious leadership and engagement, integrating reflective practice through scholarship in a cohort-driven model that balances classroom and field education.
