What Matters to Me and Why: My Journey Through Cancer: What Keeps Me Going
Edwinna M. Johnson will share her reflection on What Matters to Me and Why? titled "My Journey Through Cancer: What Keeps Me Going." What Matters to Me and Why? is a continuing series of faculty and staff talks on life, work, and meaning. Every term, staff/faculty members are invited to explore the question: what matters to you and why?
These conversations are a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come to know the people at Carleton in a deeper, more personal way. Lunch is provided.
Edwinna M. Johnson has dedicated 28 years to education, with 21 of those years in Higher Education. She along with 6 other teachers and a principal founded the Hiawatha Leadership Academy Charter School. Currently, serving As the Associate Director for the Department of Intercultural Life (OIL), Edwinna has oversight of OIL’s Peer Mentorship Program, supervising OPL’s, and Heritage Month Programming, just to mention a few. She is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive environment where students of color can thrive academically, socially, and culturally. She also works to build cross-cultural connections across campus.
Her passion for education and racial reconciliation is rooted in her family history; her grandparents, and parents who migrated from Mississippi and Louisiana to the Southside of Chicago, instilled in her values of resilience, racial reconciliation and a commitment to lifelong learning. She finds her life anchored by her faith, her marriage, her family, and a dedication to adding value to others.
Outside of her professional life Edwinna wears many hats. She's a mentor to many women, and a minister within and outside of the church. Spreading Agape love to all. Edwinna enjoys singing, dancing, reading, and watching old classic movies. She lives with her husband, Jamey J. Johnson, and their two Italian Greyhounds, Vito and Enzo. Fun fact about Edwinna, she was 1st runner up for Miss. Black Minnesota (1994-1995) and in 1990 2nd runner up for Miss. Christian World Pageant.
If you would like to nominate a speaker, please email our College Chaplain, Schuyler Vogel, at svogel@carleton.edu. We strive to represent the full diversity of staff and faculty on campus and welcome nominations regardless of role or longevity. All members of the Carleton community have wisdom to share.
The series is cosponsored with EthIC.
