Awe and Wonder

31 August 2018

Our interfaith dialogue group sometimes does an exercise called “Speed Faithing,” talking briefly with several people about a variety of topics.  When we debrief on what their favorite question was, it is usually about when they’ve experienced a moment of awe.  Such feelings of mystery and wonder cross the boundaries between faith traditions.

Awe also crosses the fuzzy line between religious and secular viewpoints.  The beauty found in nature or art, the amazement at a human creation or a scientific finding—all can lead to a profound sense of wonder, no matter what one’s perspective is.

Both faith and learning flow from this feeling of awe.  While they are sometimes seen as opposing approaches, religion and reason can go hand in hand.  Learning can inform faith and faith can enlighten learning.  Together, they help us find meaning and purpose in our lives and world.

Carleton is a lively place religiously and spiritually with almost every perspective in the world represented here, so don’t assume you are alone in your understandings or concerns. Whether you come out of a faith tradition or not, come explore these experiences of awe and wonder or the big questions of meaning and purpose with us.  Everyone is encouraged to join us at any of the many events listed on the Chapel schedule inside.
