Eight Recipients for the Hyme Loss Award for Global Engagement from Class of 2020

31 August 2020

The recipients for the 2020 Hyme Loss Award for Global Engagement were:

  • Lydia Elizabeth Field
  • Michael Elizabeth Gasior II
  • Laura Genevieve Kiernan
  • Christopher Whan Hee Lee
  • Brandon John Moy
  • Hannah Faye Parrott
  • Elizabeth Sachs
  • Cora Lynn Showers

The award was established in 2019 to honor Professor Hyme Loss, who joined the Carleton faculty in 1926 and brought experience and expertise to the foreign languages at Carleton. His studies included time in France — this in an era when languages were typically taught for reading knowledge by professors with little experience abroad — and he was fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Latin, and Greek.  The Hyme Loss Award for Global Engagement is given to seniors who demonstrate excellence beyond the existing Global Citizenship graduation requirement. It encourages students to go deeper in their foreign language acquisition, cultural immersion, global perspective-taking, and cross-cultural learning.
