Anton Wilhelm Amo: the African Philosopher in 18th Century Germany
Join Dr. Dwight K. Lewis Jr., assistant professor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota, on April 13, 5-6:15pm in the Gould Library Athenaeum for his interactive guest lecture titled "Anton Wilhelm Amo: the African Philosopher in 18th Century Germany."
Amo, originally from what is now Ghana, was an African philosopher who was enslaved, brought to Germany, and then became the first African to earn a Ph.D. in philosophy at a European university. He went on to teach philosophy at the Universities of Halle and Jena (Germany) but returned to the land of his birth in about 1747. Dr. Lewis Jr. will address themes relating to Amo's work and legacy, such as the human mind and body, racism, slavery, prejudice, and dogmatism.
