Juneteenth: Origins and Misconceptions. A discussion with Steve Williams and Professor Jorge Banuelos
Please join the Africana Studies program for a rich discussion of Juneteenth during Black History Month. Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated by African Americans, it has received renewed national attention after having been introduced as a federal holiday in 2021. The National Juneteenth Foundation is a nonprofit that has spearheaded its incorporation into federal calendars and stewarded the holiday’s meaning to African Americans. We are thrilled to be joined by Steve Williams, the President of that foundation. He will be in conversation with Professor Jorge Banuelos about the history of the holiday, its celebration, and the broader work of commemorating African American history.
This event is sponsored by the Mary and Fred Easter Endowment for Africana Studies, Ethical Inquiry at Carleton, the Office of Intercultural Life, and the Africana Studies and History Departments.
