Public Talk: Heroic Tales: Fathers, Veterans and War Nostalgia from Homer to Drones
Marco Mondini, Associate Professor of History of Conflicts, University of Padua, in collaboration with Cecilia Cozzi, Carleton College, will present a public talk titled, Heroic Tales: Fathers, Veterans and War Nostalgia from Homer to Drones.
This talk discusses the so-called “heroic paradigm,” from its Classical origins to its contemporary rejection. From Homer to the aftermath of the French Revolution, the battlefield has been regarded as the privileged venue for individuals to showcase their honor and, by doing so, to embrace their identities of male citizens. First, the talk will illustrate how war becomes a defining component in ancient literary discourses over the transmission of fatherly legacy. Next, the talk will analyze how this framework surfaces also in pivotal moments of European history (from WW1 to 1939 and the Italian resistance), when soldiers relied on their experience in battle to better articulate their intrinsic differences from previous generations.
This event is co-sponsored by CCST, Classics, EthICs, European Studies, History, Humanities Center, MARS, and Poli Sci.
This event is open to the Carleton community. A OneCard is required in order to enter Leighton.
