About the fellowship

The Broom Fellowship provides Carleton faculty with time and modest funding to conduct community and civically-engaged scholarship.

The award is intended to support faculty scholarly projects. For resources to support teaching, see the curricular innovation grant process administered by the Faculty Curricular Planning Committee (FCPC) or the Community Collaboration grants administered by the CCCE. 

Details

  • Resources Provided: The fellowship provides one course release and a $4,000 contribution to help the recipient work on their proposed project. 
  • Duration: The fellowship is one year in duration, with an option to extend for a second year upon agreement with the department chair/program director and the Provost’s Office.
  • Eligibility: Tenured faculty are eligible. Priority will be given to those who have not yet received the fellowship.
  • Timeline: Applications are due by May 15, 2026. Note: Because of the late timing, applicants should not expect to cancel fall term classes, as students will register before final decisions are made and departments can adjust their offerings.
  • Expectations: By the end of the fellowship year, recipients are expected to complete an interview with CCCE staff about their work, to be shared online, and present at a year-end symposium.
  • Selection Criteria: 
    • Strong applications will demonstrate how the fellowship would allow the recipient to deepen or expand their existing community or civically-engaged scholarship. This includes building on existing relationships with collaborators beyond campus. 
    • Recipients will be selected by the Provost’s Office & Center for Community and Civic Engagement in consultation with the relevant department chair(s)/program director(s).

FAQ

Why is the fellowship one year instead of three now?

To make the fellowship more accessible. For example, this will allow more people to benefit from the fellowship over time.

Why is the fellowship focused on community and civically-engaged scholarship?

Because the fellowship is housed in the CCCE and it aligns with its mission and expertise.

Do I have to have a specific community partner named in my application?

No. However, existing relationships with collaborators strengthens an application.

Does my project have to be done within one year?

No.

Does my project have to be local?

No.

Can I use some of my awarded funds to pay a collaborator?

Yes, but you are not required to do so. You could also use the funds for travel, supplies, etc.

Will there be ongoing financial or administrative support for my project after the fellowship is complete?

This fellowship award is limited in duration. It will be the recipient’s responsibility to secure resources to support the work beyond the end of the fellowship. We encourage recipients to work with the grants office to explore outside funding.

What stage must my project be in to be eligible?

Projects at any stage are eligible, from planning to dissemination.

How many people will receive the fellowship each year?

For 2026-27, we plan to select one fellow. Based on what we learn from the first year, there is the possibility of up to two fellows in future years.
