New Indigenous Communities Liaison Expands CCCE Partnership Capacity
Marcy Averill joined the Carleton’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement Office (CCCE) in September as the college’s new Indigenous Communities Liaison. Averill is a bridge builder and cultural knowledge holder who is stewarding relationships between Carleton and our neighboring Native communities and organizations. This work supports the wellbeing of our Indigenous students and promotes ethical scholarly engagement with Native partners, but above all, it advances our commitment to healing between Carleton and the still vital Wahpekute and Mdewakanton Dakota people whose displacement enabled Carleton’s founding. All of these goals recently converged on Indigenous Peoples Day when Prairie Island partners, Indigenous staff and students, and non-native allies gathered on campus to be in community, sharing food, traditions, and music.
