Max Lyonga’s Carleton Residency

24 January 2019

Max Lyonga is a contemporary Cameroonian painter. He is a largely self-taught artist who has participated in workshops organized in Cameroon and abroad. He has lived in the world of painting for more than two decades.

He calls his approach the “mokwe” style, for he mixes abstraction with impressionism, painting with both acrylics and local materials. He enjoys painting with warm colors, for he is of those who believe that painting should be an instrument used to take people of a journey full of hope and joy.

Art without Boundaries” is a collection of some of his paintings done before the crisis in the anglophone regions, as well as those produced after moving to the francophone area. It is like a journey in two mental states of inspiration.

His upcoming events are the following:

  • Life in the Midst of Conflict: Insights and Reflections on Monday, Feb. 4, 6PM in Willis 204. Dinner will be provided for the first 20 participants.
  • Art Without Boundaries artist talk on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 5PM in the Weitz. The artwork will be displayed in the Hamlin Space and the talk will take place in the Mar-G Commons.

In addition, Max Lyonga will have office hours in the CCCE (Sayles 159) from 12-1PM on Feb. 6-8 and from 4-5PM on Jan. 29-31 and Feb. 6-7.

These events are sponsored by the Center for Global & Regional Studies, the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, the Dean of the College Office, and The Arts at Carleton.
