Professor Kim Smith has been awarded a Broom Public Scholarship grant to complete her “Prairie Creek Wildlife Management Area Web Development” project. This project aim is to take material generated by students in the spring-term 2016 Environment and Society course and use it to update the Friends of Prairie Creek website. The centerpiece of the Environment and Society course is an on-going civic engagement project: Students engage in “place study,” gathering scientific and social information about the Prairie Creek Wildlife Management Area over the course of the term. They create their own websites to communicate their findings (using Google sites). Material from these student-designed sites are then used to develop the Prairie Creek digital archive and to improve the WMA’s website. The Friends of Prairie Creek, which maintains the website, is their valued community partner.
