Civic Engagement Public Works Workshop: December 2017
Faculty teaching ACE courses and/or conducting public scholarship are invited to a winter break workshop scheduled for December 6th and 7th, 2017. Topics we will explore in this two-day workshop include reflection, positionality, and civic responsibility. This workshop is sponsored by the Broom Fellow of Public Scholarship, Center for Community and Civic Engagement, the Gould Library Reference Librarians, and Carleton’s Public Works Initiative supported by the Mellon Grant. For questions, please contact Terra LaChance (tlachance), or Annette Nierobisz (anierobisz).
Exploring collaboration with the Northfield community: February 2017
Visiting Assistant Professor Cecilia Cornejo is a Chilean-born nonfiction filmmaker, artist, teacher, and translator. With ties to both the American Midwest and the central coast of Chile, she uses a range of approaches and production methodologies—from the very personal and essayistic to the expansive and collaborative—to create films that move fluidly from the local to the global, and from the intimate to the openly political.
In 2012, Cornejo embarked on the Living Marginal project, a trilogy of films centered in Northfield that explores the experience of communities that are removed from the social, political, and geographic heart of the town. The first film in the trilogy, Make No Noise ~ The Story of a Skatepark (2016), chronicled the long struggle of local skateboarders to secure a permanent place for their sport. The second installment, Ways Of Being Home (2019), explores issues of displacement and marginalization as experienced by members of the Mexican community living in town.
Cornejo showed her work-in-progress and talked about her experience collaborating with these two distinct Northfield communities on Thursday February 23, at 7pm in the Weitz cinema (in English), and on Sunday February 26, at 2pm in St. Dominic Church (in Spanish).
Technology to Engage in Public Scholarship: December 2015
This winter break workshop provided guidance for faculty who would like to work with technology either in courses or in their own public scholarship. These technologies may include Wikipedia, web page design, blogging, a tool for curating online exhibits, (Omeka,), and GIS. Our time will be a mix of learning about the new technologies, conceptualizing your project, and hands-on time to work.
Public Scholarship Explored: Forms & Possibilities: February 2015
This workshop focused on various approaches to public/engaged scholarship and include resources and ideas for publishing one’s work. Julie Plaut, the Executive Director of Minnesota Campus Compact, will be our guest speaker; the workshop will also include time for participants to share current or future projects, challenges, and ideas for support needed. This event is the second in a series of related workshops sponsored jointly by Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges.
