We were awarded a Broom Public Scholarship grant to present a paper on free expression, diversity and higher education at the American Association of University Professors Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. in June 2017. Our paper explored how the proliferation of campus speech codes affects the academic freedom of faculty members and students. We were able to engage both professors and administrators in a productive conversation about speech codes and their implications for classroom teaching, intellectual inquiry and campus culture. We believe it is vital that the public debate about campus free speech include the perspectives of faculty members devoted to learning and teaching in the liberal arts.
