Winter Leadership Retreat

3 February 2016

On Saturday January 30th, the CCCE continued building a community of engaged students through hosting its second leadership retreat. Over 70 CCCE fellows, program directors, Reads and Counts Tutors, and other CCCE volunteers attended and engaged with a variety of presenters.

Student leaders first learned about the opportunity gap from Jennifer Lompart, a community partner and teacher at Northfield High School who spoke about working with English Language Learners. Two of Jennifer’s students also attended to share their spoken word poetry.

Next Adriana Estill, Professor of English and American Studies, challenged students to engage with their positionality and identify their implicit biases. The facilitation, modeled after the Critical Conversations at Carleton program that Adriana co-coordinates, helped students think about how their unique identities affect communication with fellow students and community partners.

Finally, Chavonna Savage-Clowney, Program Director for Student Engagement at the Career Center, along with Student Career Center Associates, led sessions on how students can effectively market their volunteer experiences to potential employers.

The Winter Leadership Retreat was made possible by a generous grant from the C. Charles Jackson Foundation. Thanks to all the students, staff, and community members who made this a meaningful experience!
