College Health Corps Health Vista with Growing Up Healthy

This position is an opportunity to work with Growing Up Healthy in both grassroots and systems change approaches to improving the health of Rice County residents.  Specific duties will include: researching the comprehensive mental health needs of low-income and non-English speaking residents; partnering with Carleton College and St. Olaf College to promote health careers, a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health, and a perspective of health other than the “medical model”; and working with teams of neighborhood leaders (community organizers) to deliver health literacy related events to neighborhood residents.  This project builds upon the work which has been done by Mohamed Bakri who is currently serving as the Public Health VISTA at Carleton.  Ability to speak either Spanish or Somali in addition to English highly preferred.  Contact Janet Lewis Muth (507-301-8557,  janet@growinguphealthy.org) with specific questions.

TORCH Post-Secondary Specialist Vista at Northfield Public Schools

TORCH supports Northfield middle school and high school low-income, minority and first generation college bound students to graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. The VISTA member will assist in developing a program that will help students attain the confidence, study skills and personal habits to become successful college students. The VISTA member will also assist students transition to post-secondary programs by connecting them with the appropriate support services. This person will also collaborate with Carleton and its VISTA to support the Riverland college access program.
