21 April 2015The City of Northfield has joined the ranks of many Minnesota cities that seek to find and improve ways in which their operations can be environmentally friendly and healthy. The Minnesota GreenStep program, a part of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, is a voluntary endeavor for cities to take part in to improve the quality of life for its citizens, while implementing green initiatives for a healthier atmosphere.

In recent years, Northfield has changed. We are no longer only the land of “colleges, cows, and contentment,” but also a community with vibrant CSA’s. As the town has embraced it’s agrarian roots, as cornfields line the highway, and CSA’s flood the local foodchain, co-op and farmers market, it is time for education—in our colleges and primary schools—to acknowledge and embrace such transformation.

Carleton senior Ben Hellerstein ’12 and St. Olaf senior Sean Hayford O’Leary were instrumental in organizing a college-community group which solicited letters of support from local groups including the school district, bike trail supporters, and others to ask the City to develop a Complete Streets policy, which was recognized as one of the top 10 best in the nation.
