Students in Prof. Melissa Eblen Zayas’s “Material Science, Energy and the Environment” have been studying the environmental impact of the materials we use in our day-to-day life. Using physics and chemistry, they have been looking at everything from composting, to recycling, to biodegradable materials as ways to develop more energy efficient ways of living.
This past Friday, six students in the class wrote a letter to the editor that appeared in the Northfield News, urging the city to consider adopting curbside compost pick-up. Currently, the city’s Environmental Quality Commission is planning a pilot program involving around 100 households.
The students are holding a meeting about this initiative in the public library at 7pm on March 5. This will be an open space for comments, concerns, and discussion open to the public.
