Carleton student making connections between Minn/Iraq children

10 November 2009

Carleton student Mahal Burr has been working with non-profit org Children’s Culture Connection to facilitate a letter writing program between Iraqi children and students in the Cannon Valley Public Schools. A book about the correspondence entitled Dear Friend: U.S./Iraqi Kids Connect is being published and Burr will be signing copies at an event tomorrow.

The reception will be on Wednesday November 11th, Veteran’s Day, at 7PM in the Carleton library’s Athenaeum. Selected Cannon Valley Schools students will be reading from their letters and discussing the book.

Projects such as this show how reaching out into the local community can have an effect far beyond even national borders. By promoting a universal message of peace and understanding, Burr and the Children’s Culture Connection are illustrating how international friendship can begin close to home in Southern Minnesota.

For more information, see the Carleton Media Relations article about the event.
