Data Centers in the Age of AI
Fri, May 9, 2025
• 4:00pm
- 5:00pm (1h) • Leighton 236

Many of us have been using AI more and more in the past few months, but what changes does using ChatGPT actually cause in our physical environment? Data centers, where the computers running AI are stored, are being built all over the US to keep up with growing demand. This may seem like a far-off occurrence but many of these new data centers are in Minnesota, and even Northfield could get one!
What impacts would a Northfield data center have on our environment? How are Minnesota policy makers reacting to the boom in data center construction? Does our own day-to-day use of AI influence any of all this?
We will be answering those questions and more at "Data Centers in the Age of AI: Minnesotan Policy and Environmental Impacts Close to Home". This event will run from 4-5pm on Friday, May 9th in Leighton 236. We'll have a presentation by students from Carleton's CCCE, the Office of Sustainability, as well as St. Olaf's Environmental Studies 237 class! Following the presentation will be a discussion session to process how we think about and interact with AI. We hope to see you there!
