You All Have Had a Wild Ride

10 June 2020

To the Class of 2020:

You all have had a wild ride. You arrived at Carleton as the largest class ever in the history of the college, and they had to find creative ways to house you all. It dumped buckets on drop-off day, so your big frisbee toss moment was in the gym instead of on the Bald Spot—an ominous beginning. And we’ll never stop talking about what a crazy time the past few months have been, as you end your Carleton time not on campus, with trouble and unrest of many kinds permeating the US and the world.

You’ve had many adventures in between, and I really hope they have included productive challenges, the making of good friends, occasions for quiet reflection, times you’ve laughed yourself sick, and wondrous and glorious moments when it was all you could do to take it all in. I expect the difficulties you’ve faced will make your bond particularly special over time, as this becomes part of your history. I am eager to see the ways you all go out into the world and make a difference, in ways large and small. I offer heartfelt congratulations and good wishes to each and every one of you!
