Faculty Advising

Faculty and staff play a critical role in helping students clarify their values and interests, build confidence in their skills, and make connections with Carleton alumni and friends of the College.
Beginning with your arrival in the fall and continuing through your first two years at Carleton, you are assigned a “liberal arts adviser” who will help orient you to the educational opportunities at Carleton and facilitate active and thoughtful planning. When you declare a major, you’ll develop an advising relationship with a professor in your area of study. You’ll work with this “major adviser,” and often with other mentors as well, through coursework, research, and engaged learning opportunities on and off campus to finish your pathway towards graduation.

Student-Faculty Research
At Carleton, our students’ intellectual curiosity drives their engagement in research in a variety of disciplines — and sometimes across them.
In keeping with Carleton’s commitment to close collaboration between faculty and students, faculty-mentored student research is part of many courses. Part or full-time supervised research is available during both summer and winter breaks. Independent research can be pursued any time of the year, either on or off campus.
