The Applied Externship is a one- to three-week experience (20–120 hours) offered between December 2 – 19, 2025, designed for juniors and seniors seeking to build industry-specific skills. Hosted by Carleton College alumni, parents, friends, or employers, these externships may be in-person, virtual, or hybrid.

Students participate in project-based work or active shadowing to gain deeper insight into a career field of interest and build professional connections. These opportunities require a foundational level of skill or knowledge, offering a more immersive, hands-on way to explore industries and apply classroom learning in real-world settings.

Applied Externship (without Project Component) will include:

  • Introduce the student to at least one critical skill associated with your company or industry
  • Provide a defined time to meet 1:1 with the student to answer provided reflection questions, give feedback, and encourage the student’s career understanding
  • A structured opportunity for student(s) to build interview skills and improve the quality of their application materials through the application process
  • Advanced network development through coordinating at least three informational interviews in functional areas in your career industry, so that student has guidance in their career trajectory

Applied Externship (with Project Component) will include the above and:

  • A defined project provided by the externship host for student, to be completed during the program

Applied Externships are open to juniors and seniors. If you have any questions about the information below, reach out to us externships@carleton.edu.

Student Eligibility

  • Current Juniors and Seniors
  • Students must meet Career Center Success-Ready Resume standards to apply for an applied externship experience. Please schedule a 1:1 resume meeting with a professional career coach or a student career assistant before applying to your externship experience.
  • Students must write a cover letter for each position they apply to, reflecting on why the role is important to them and how it relates to their career interests.
  • International students who receive an unpaid externship offer AND externship funding from the Career Center do not need to apply for work authorization.
  • All other international students need to use Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Students are obligated to contact International Student Life to arrange for CPT.
