Summer externship at New Orleans farm school with Carleton alum

Nat Turner ’93 will host two Carleton students this summer in New Orleans, LA at Our School at Blair Grocery where students will help and assist with rebuilding a community in New Orleans that was wiped out in Hurricane Katrina.

Externship Position Title:  Neighborhood Summer School Co-Coordinator

Number of positions available: 2

Length of externship: June 20-July 17 (4 weeks)

Job Description:

Our School at Blair Grocery is an independent community school in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.  Founded by Carleton Alum Nat Turner in November of 2008, Our School operates an experiential, service-learning based curriculum with New Orleans teenagers and an afterschool program with neighborhood children on the 1/3 acre urban farm surrounding the campus.  This summer, two Carleton College students will each serve four weeks as co-coordinators for Our School at Blair Grocery’s Neighborhood Summer School.  During Summer School hours, Co-coordinators will work with Our School’s After School Teacher to facilitate daily children’s programming, including youth gardening, games and activities.  When Summer School is not in session, Co-Coordinators will work with Our School’s Farming Teacher to maintain the urban farm and composting operation.

Home-stay description:

Externs will be living at the school in a dorm/shared sleeping space environment. Mr. Turner lives on the grounds as well. There is a farm on the property that includes chickens, goats, cats, dogs, etc. Don’t worry you will not be sleeping with these animals.
