Navigating Application Timelines for Internships and Full-Time Positions

24 November 2024

Whether your student is seeking a summer internship or a full-time position, early planning and strategic action are important ingredients for a successful search.

There is a lot for candidates to know as they prepare for their industry or role of choice. One of these elements is the unique hiring preparation and timeline for their industry. Hiring timelines vary considerably by industry, which can create perceptions for students about what is or is not happening in the world of hiring. In general, the more predictable the business needs of an organization or the larger the company, the earlier the organization will recruit. Industries like consulting, finance, and banking often hire very early in the academic year or even before the academic year begins. Industries like nonprofits, arts, and media often hire later in the academic year.

Understanding the application timeline and leveraging available resources, helps students focus their time and energy when it is most important and helps students balance the many responsibilities that compete for their time. Here are three ways your student can learn more about the hiring process and timelines for their industry of choicer:

  1. Conduct an informational interview with personal contacts or alumni: This career exploration and network-building strategy offers students a chance to learn more about a specific industry or job of interest and network with professionals in that field, which could lead to an internship or job.
  2. Meet with a professional career coach: Career Coaches are cognizant of industry standards and have many resources to share. Students can schedule an appointment through Handshake.
  3. Research and remember application timelines: Below are timelines for full-time positions and internships based on Carleton Career Center data.
