Technological tools have both increased the amount of information our students digest on a daily basis and made it easier to sort that information so students can quickly attend to what is most relevant to them. Carleton has partnered with the Handshake app to provide students with a plethora of opportunities to connect with thousands of employers through events, direct messaging, and job/internship applications. Handshake is also smart—it learns about and caters to students’ interests.

Your student can maximize what they get out of Handshake by taking the following steps:

  1. Activate their Handshake account using their Carleton email address.
  2. Tell Handshake about their career interests and goals. This allows the Carleton Career Center team to send your student emails about opportunities that align with their interests. It also teaches Handshake about the kinds of employers and opportunities to present to your student on their Handshake homepage and in Handshake’s personalized emails.
  3. Follow employers of potential interest. This teaches Handshake’s algorithm about your students’ interests and your student will be automatically notified when those specific employers have posted a new job, internship, or event. (Helpful for our busy Carls!)
  4. Set their notification preferences so that they get only the emails and in-app notifications that are most helpful to them, and in the ways they prefer.

If your student would like assistance with getting their Handshake account activated and set up, they can drop by the Carleton Career Center to work with a friendly, trained peer (Student Career Assistant) Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—no appointment needed.
