Lakota Language Internship at Pine Ridge
15 November 2018Haley Grable ’20 spent her summer working at the Lakota Language Immersion Childcare at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Grable assisted in developing educational materials in Lakotan for the preschool children, helping to teach a new generation of fluent speakers.

On Friday, May 11, Lillie Schneyer ’18 and Gray Babbs ’18 released a document called “Being Not-Rich at Carleton.” The 24-page guide, which is broken into categories “Emergencies,” “Living,” “Health,” “Academics” and “Employment,” lists campus resources that can make Carleton more affordable.

Since this past January, students and faculty in a wide variety of academic departments and programs have been benefiting from the recently created Center for Global and Regional Studies (CGRS). According to its website, the CGRS aims “to promote programs and experiences that connect the education students receive on the Carleton campus with communities beyond campus—locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.” So far, it incorporates eighteen departments and programs, all of which include a focus on language or area studies. While some of these departments are also connected to the Language Center, others—such as American studies—are not.

The Career Center’s Scholars Program is an experiential learning opportunity for students to explore career options, make connections with alumni, and hone their networking and professional skills. Students from all majors are introduced to a specific industry area by incorporating skills acquired through the career readiness component (weekly assignments leading up to the site visits and a networking workshop led by Lee Caraher ’86) prior to attending an on-campus symposium, exploratory site visits to a variety of companies/organizations, and an alumni networking event during spring break. This year, students explored careers in public policy and sustainability.
