What goes in the trash/recycling/compost on campus?

This is from the Carleton Sustainability Program.

As we are approaching the beginning of the academic year, some reminders about waste:

  • We have a new assortment of products entering our waste stream due to COVID-19 (masks, gloves, etc.) These items are landfill.
  • Only clean office paper, as well as newspapers and magazines, can go into recycling.
  • Paper towels and other soiled paper products should go into compost.
  • If an item is laminated, it needs to be landfilled.
  • For the safety of our custodians and those who handle our waste, safely dispose of glass or sharp objects by placing them in a cardboard box, tape it shut and put in the landfill.
  • Only BPI-certified compostable silverware is able to be composted.
  • Regular plastic silverware is landfill.
  • To promote reThe Office Supply Swap Shop is open, please use the hand sanitizer provided prior to touching items.

Remember, when in doubt, throw it out (in the landfill)!
Thanks so much, please email wastebusters@carleton.edu or refer to the signage attached if you have any waste-sorting questions!
